Opening Session of UNODC Boat Maintenance Training Course in Seychelles

The UNODC Boat Maintenance Training Course in Seychelles for members of the Coast Guard and the Marine Police began on July 27th, 2026 at Training and Support Centre at the Seychelles Coast Guard Base, where the opening session was held in attendance of Mr SAKUTA Makoto, Ambassador of Japan to Seychelles, Commander Lieutenant Colonel David ARRISOL, Mr Norman KITONGA, Instructor and Marine Engineer of UNODC as well as trainees of the Coast Guard. This five-day training course is being held as part of Japan-funded UNODC project “Improving sustainability of maritime law enforcement agencies in East Africa through standardization and advanced skills for employment of technology”.
Ambassador SAKUTA underscored, given that the work of the Coast Guard is constantly exposed to risks and carries the serious responsibility of safeguarding public safety, the importance of making use of the training programme to ensure that the engines and equipment of boats are always maintained in optimal working order. He expressed his hope that the participants will learn a lot from the instructor and then themselves serve as instructors in the country.
After the opening session, Ambassador SAKUTA made a brief tour of the training site.
