The Reception to Celebrate the 65th Birthday of His Majesty the Emperor of Japan

On 25th February 2025, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Seychelles Mr Sakuta, Makoto, hosted a reception to celebrate the 65th birthday of His Majesty the Emperor of Japan. The reception was attended by Speaker of the National Assembly Hon Roger Mancienne, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court His Lordship Rony Govinden, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism Mr Sylvestre Radegonde, who delivered remarks on behalf of the Government of Seychelles, other ministers and dignitaries, government officials, members of the diplomatic corps as well as guests from the private sector and Japanese residents in Seychelles.

At the outset of his remarks, Ambassador Sakuta said that he has been privileged to serve as Japan's first resident Ambassador to Seychelles, and will strive to further strengthen the ties between our countries, especially as Japan and Seychelles will celebrate their 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations in 2026.

Ambassador Sakuta mentioned that both countries share core values such as the rule of law and democracy, and that Seychelles is an essential partner for Japan in promoting the Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP), a vision that fosters peace and prosperity regionally and globally.

Ambassador Sakuta highlighted various Japan's assistance efforts, such as the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)'s capacity building training programs, which have trained over 400 Seychellois professionals; Japan's maritime law enforcement efforts, including the ongoing assistance for the Marine Police; Japan's assistance to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to strengthen maritime security measures across the Western Indian Ocean and East Africa; and assistance to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to support a marine conservation project.

Ambassador Sakuta expressed his expectation to strengthen bilateral relations through the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9) in Yokohama in August 2025 and Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai which will open from April 2025.

Lastly, Ambassador Sakuta said that as 23rd May 2025 will mark the centenary of the passing of Japanese photographer Ohashi Samuel Shingow, who is said to have lived in Seychelles over 120 years ago and to have engaged in exchanges between Japan and Seychelles through his postcards capturing the landscapes of Seychelles, the Embassy is currently preparing a symposium in collaboration with the National Museum of History to commemorate his legacy.

At the reception, participants enjoyed Japanese food prepared by the Ambassador's Residence chef as well as Japanese rice and sake. The event also promoted Japan’s attractions with the help of the Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO) and Miyazu City, Kyoto Prefecture.
