English Rakugo Delighted Audiences in Seychelles

On August 10 and 11, 2026, the Embassy of Japan in Seychelles organised English Rakugo shows and a workshop by Mr. Kimochi, an English Rakugo performer from Japan.
Rakugo is a traditional Japanese form of storytelling. A single performer sits on stage and tells a variety of tales—both comic and poignant—by playing multiple characters through changes in vocal tone and gestures.
During the shows, Mr. Kimochi began with an introduction to the origins of Rakugo, how to perform using a few simple props, and the essence and motivation behind its storytelling, before moving on to his main stories. The audience were captivated by his unique, impactful expressions and laughed at his punchlines many times.
At the workshop, children and young people learned Rakugo performance skills, including facial expressions, posture, and eye contact, and tried them out on stage. They were very enthusiastic and enjoyed experimenting with different vocal tones and gestures.
These events provided a unique Japanese cultural experience and an opportunity to deepen our friendship in this auspicious 50th anniversary year of diplomatic relations between Japan and Seychelles.
